A step back to the future: the American monastic retreat and the Orthodox christian theology of psychophysical healing

The monastic retreat is a common phenomenon among various religious groups in the United States of America. This paper examines the response of contemporary Orthodox Christianity to this phenomenon, focusing on the work of Fr. Meletios Webber, abbot of the St. John of San Francisco Monastery in Manton, California, and his 2010 retreat entitled “Physician Heal Thyself.” It will draw comparisons between the Orthodox monastic retreat and that of other religious traditions, especially the Catholic. It will explore the theological underpinnings that influence the practice of these retreats within the Orthodox realm, and in doing so will compare this Orthodox theology and practice of psychophysical healing with the goals and the practice of modern Western professional psychotherapy. This will lead to a consideration of the roles and goal of Orthodox Christianity within the realm of contemporary Western society.
Addictive consumables and networks of commerce – opium in colonial Assam

The essay attempts at an interpretation of the interweaved networks of consumption mannerisms and the flow and exchange of ‘illicit’commodities across frontiers.It also seeks to attempt an understanding of the subtle relationships between the intertwined interests of commerce and the anthropology of consumption.The metamorphosis of opium from a luxury to a neccesity was attended with social, economic and political ramifications. The mapping of the demographics of addiction and patterns of use was essential to sustaining the colonial project.It entailed the quantification of people’s habits as normal and the deviant or pathological which required targeted intervention.
Adolescents' social representation about political Left- and Right-wing ideologies

In daily discourse people often talk about the ‘left’ and ‘right’ as a potential label of their political identity. Are these names just simple labels or do they have an underlying content? The social representations theory can be a conceptual framework to examine the core- and peripheral contents of ideologies. A plenty of research have investigated adults’ political views and thoughts, but only a few studies concentrated on teenagers’ opinion and concepts about ideologies. The aim of this paper (as a part of a bigger research) was to reveal adolescents’ social representations of the political Left and Right. Using the Five Words Association Method we attempted to explore the social representation of political Left and Right among adolescents. 228 high school students participated in the study. Data showed that the core structure of the representation is formed by current political actors, ideologies and symbolic contents, such as colors regardless to the wing. In addition, periphery mostly included actual-political contents, methods and tools of political activity. An affective evaluation also was characteristic for both sides, however, the direction varied. Left was associated more often with negative adjectives and deviant behavior. These findings refer to the importance of historical context.
Affective equivalence relations in synaesthetic phrases

The paper argues that the semantic processes underlying proper (e. g. warm colour) and physiognomic synaesthesias (e. g. cheerful colour) are based not on conceptual mapping, but on affective equivalence relations.

Associating Left and Right – the meaning of ideology in a Hungarian context

In the last decades of political ideological research, the existance and meaning of the Left-Right dimension has been questioned. In our study we employed a free associations method to determine the meaning of these categories. Our results prove that Hungarians do use these categories and they contain a distinct meaning that is diverse but interpretable. Many features emerge that cannot be found in Western European countries such as: conservatism associated with the political Left and wanting change with the political Right. The abscence of economical factors is also notable. We believe that the data obtained by the free associations method provides an excellent ground for international comparisons, especially among countries with a postcommunist heritage.
Association agreement as a form of EU cooperation with the “third” states

The article provides complex analysis of EU cooperation with the “third” states, namely, in the form of cooperation called “Association agreements”. It is stated that this type of cooperation is aimed at strengthening the cooperation between the international actors and in future can lead to the full-fledged integration of the associate state with the European Community. The article considers the samples of “Association agreements” making with different states and regions, their content and consequences for the “third” states.
Borrowings in the Ukrainian literary language and Galician dialect

There are no facts of borrowing from the Italian language to the Galician dialect In Ukraine. This phenomenon bases the novelty of the topic. The objective of the research is to explore and scientifically prove the existence of borrowing from the Italian language to the Galician dialect. The result is to confirm the hypothesis of the existence of borrowing from Italian language to the Ukrainian Galician dialect.
Building the support models of young prisoners rehabilitation and reintegration

This paper aims to present a rehabilitation aspect of work and the need of building the support models for facilitating the labor market integration of prisoners leaving penal institutions. An innovative EU project entitled “PI model of a comprehensive system of cooperation with employers to support the market entry of young prisoners in Lublin province” was presented as an example of such integration approach.

Centrality of religion and health behaviours among medicine and clerical students

Pro-health attitudes depend on many factors, such as sex, age, education, income or education. Numerous researches show that an important source of pro-health behaviours is religiousness as a major factor motivating to take different actions. This research tries to answer the question: what is the role of religiousness in forming pro-health behaviours? To achieve this goal 143 students of medicine and 100 clerical students (theology students preparing to priesthood) have been examined. All of them were 3rd year students.
Classroom discourse and power: insights into learner empowerment in L2 classroom

Powerandrelationship in discourse community is an intriguing topic to study on. And classroom discourse community is a place where institutional talk takes place, which is different from some contexts creating informal communication. In this paper, author aims to explore the discourse and power relationship in L2 classroom so that insights into the issue of learner empowerment can be analyzed. The author draws upon conversation analytical tool to look into communication in a specific L2 classroom. Two predominant problems are found. (1) Effects of teachers’ dominance in teaching/learning, and (2) impediment of L2- only instruction seem to be salient. Finally, a succinct conclusion is made about the importance of learner empowerment and necessity to do classroom discourse analysis.
Consciousness and the moral permissibility of infantide

In this paper I critique and amend Hassoun and Kriegel’s argument for the moral permissibility of infanticide. I argue that the original case is greatly strengthened by introducing temporal considerations. The argument is intended not to show the permissibility of infanticide, but rather that there are underlying problems in our understanding of either consciousness, morality or both.
Cultural politics of Soviet government and its influence on the activities cultural institutions of Galicia in World War II (1939–1941)

In this paper, it was considered the influence of the Soviet occupation regime on the activities of cultural institutions in Galicia in 1939–1941. It is important to study the prerequisites and consequences of the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine, especially in Galicia, and to clarify the content and methods of propagation policies of the totalitarian regime and its influence on the cultural institutions, as they occupy an important role in the development of human society and national-patriotic education of the population. In recent decades, special attention is paid to the study of the cultural politics of occupation regimes in Ukraine, which allows to do a comparative analysis and to complement previously made conclusions.

Democratic values as the source of Ukrainian «soft power» policy

The article analyzes the significance of democratic values as an important source of Ukrainian «soft power» policy. It also investigates negative tendencies that take place at the present stage of implementation of «soft power» policy in Ukraine. Moreover, the conclusion about the necessity of accomplishing a number of conditions for a successful implementation of foreign policy strategy of «soft power» in Ukraine and also improvement image of the country in the global community has been drawn.
Documents Central State Historical Archives in Lviv as a Channel of Social Communication

The paper analyzes the archival documents of the Central State Historical Archives in Lviv as a channel of social communication. What is important for the analysis and study of military affairs, the medieval city of Lviv in the second half of the XIV–XVIII centuries. The paper presents a computerization of archives, which plays an important role in the archive as a structure of social communication, which will establish new facts in the history of the city.
Economic sanctions and U.S. foreign policy on Iran

The purpose of the study is to analyze the main foreign policy documents that form the U.S. policy of sanctions, according to the sectors of Iran’s economy that are subject of authorization from 1979 to 2012. The analysis of basic spheres of economy, which are subject sanctioning, is carried out, in accordance with the legislation of the USA for the last thirty years, the evolution of the American system of discriminatory limitations is traced in relation to Islam Republic.
Ediplomacy as an important component of modern system of international relations

Embodied representations in describing abstract and concrete concepts

Qualitative differences between brief and superficial vs thoughtful and substantial depiction of an abstract and a concrete concept was investigated. First superficial sketches of abstract and concrete concepts represent emotional or socially “prototypical” images. Depicting essential characteristics of a concept, subjects give more individual representations, more metaphorical answers and images based on dynamic embodied patterns.
