    The world’s growing population and, as a result, higher consumption of goods and services have led to a rapid increase in municipal solid waste. This situation creates serious environmental problems that require clear strategies for managing this waste. Improving the efficiency of recycling to restore quality materials, saving resources and maintaining waste in landfills are among the most pressing problems of our time. The article considers the existing methods of solid waste management in order to select the most optimal waste management system in the context of sustainable development.

    Clean utilization of municipal solid wastes and alternative fuels derived from it

    For the municipal solid waste (MSW) to be used in a proper way, it is necessary to implement clean technologies capable of thermal treatment of MSW and RDF in order to produce heat and electricity while meeting current ecological requirements. Nowadays, a number of technologies for MSW/RDF thermal treating are being used worldwide. Among them, the most proven technologies, applicable for industrial introduction, have been considered while analyzing their advantages/ disadvantages accounting for local conditions of Ukraine.

    Енергетичне використання горючих відходів як спосіб зниження негативного впливу на довкілля

    Подано результати моніторингу викидів забруднювальних речовин від установок утилізації горючих відходів на сміттєспалювальних заводах і в обертових випалювальних печах. Показана можливість енергетичного використання горючих відходів як альтернативного палива у цементній промисловості. The paper presents results of the pollutant emissions monitoring from combustible waste utilization facilities such as incineration plants and rotary cement kilns. Possibility of combustilbe wastes as alternative fuels usage in cement industry was shown.
