At universities and university colleges in Canada, there is an emphasis on degree programs. Applied degrees are offered by some colleges. At all other institutions, the emphasis is on diploma and certificate programs.Item Canadianisms as a distinctive feature of Canadian territorial variety of English(Видавництво Львівської політехніки, 2017-06-08) Shynkaruk, Vira; Levyk, Zoriana; Lviv Polytechnic National UniversityThe article highlights some distinctive lexical features of Canadian territorial variety of English. It pays attention to preconditions and factors which influenced its development. It also provides examples of unique words that do not occur in any other variety of English. Besides, a list of loan words from British and American English is given, as well as some words of French origin. The main task of the article is an attempt to classify Canadianisms according to the specific environment in which they are used.Item Estuary English: tomorrow’s RP or bastardized Cockney?(Видавництво Львівської політехніки, 2017-06-08) Levyk, Zoriana; Shynkaruk, Vira; Lviv Polytechnic National UniversityThe article deals with the so called Estuary English (an accent of English which originated near London within the estuary of the Thames – hence its name). Characteristic features of this accent are discussed. Its peculiarities are compared with the characteristic features of Received Pronunciation and non-standard Cockney speech, the dialect of native Londoners. The issue of the Estuary English social status is also discussed, since certain researchers claim that this accent is likely to gain the status of standard English accent, especially taking into account the increasing number of native speakers who defy Received Pronunciation.Item Gender issues in language and translation: English ↔ Ukrainian(Видавництво Львівської політехніки, 2017-06-08) Bordyuk, Lyudmyla; Lviv Polytechnic National UniversityThe paper deals with a sociolinguistic issues of gender. The ways of their translation into Ukrainian language were analyzed. The issue of Russian barbarisms in Ukrainian terminology was raised.
